Make Believe : On Telling Stories to Children
You might think you don't need to read a book about children's literature for adults, and you would be very wrong. You would also miss out on the most inspiring, funny, hopeful book I've read, maybe ever! Mac Barnett is the ninth U.S. Ambassador for Young People's Literature and a wonderful author to boot. Let me share an insight from this book with you.
"What if they (children) are in fact better equipped to engage deeply with stories than adults? What if the purpose of an arts education is not only the accumulation of new skills, but also the reviving of long-dormant sensitivities? What if humans' ability to appreciate art is, if not innate, awakened early in childhood? Well, then we'd better do our best to make some good kids' books."
This book has grabbed my heart and given it a good shake! I am re-looking at my favorite children's books and completely re-evaluating the children's section in my bookstore. What a gift this is to us. Please don't miss it.
This is especially essential for parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers. YOU have the esteemed honor of shaping children, and BOOKS are your secret weapon.
