Life, and Death, and Giants
One reviewer described this novel as "literary magic," and I could not agree more. Life, & Death, & Giants is the kind of hidden gem I am always ecstatic to find, and the book I will be pressing into the hands of everyone I know this fall.
The story centers on Gabriel Fisher, a giant from an Amish community in Wisconsin, born weighing eighteen pounds by a single mother who dies in childbirth, and growing to nearly eight feet tall. He communes with animals, defies expectation on the football field, and leads an extraordinary life, yet it is his heart that becomes legend. His story is told through the eyes of those he touches: the devout grandmother wrestling with faith, the country vet who is like a father, the bar owner who bridges two worlds, and the coach who mentors him from the sidelines, not only of the field but his life.
Reading Life, & Death, & Giants is one of those books that makes me glad to be alive and to be a reader; it's a gift that keeps on giving long after you've finished.
