Liar's Dice

Dolores and Mita are twin girls growing up in 1970s Brazil in lockstep, leading Carnaval parades, speaking in their secret language, and never losing sight of each other. The family moves to Rio, and their parents are living a glitzy city existence. Gradually, Mita's health goes downhill from a series of devastating seizures. The next thing Dolores knows, Mita is in a hospital in England to stay.

Dolores makes an exciting new friend, Andrea, in her stodgy British school, who has her frequenting parts of Rio that her parents would never allow. Andrea shows her what street-smart is in a time when the government can easily make people disappear; she learns how to go to any length to get what she wants, to get her sister back. This debut is an ode to sisterhood and hits all the right notes.
