Amity

This book is simply gorgeous! 

Following the lives of June and Coleman, a brother-sister duo who have recently been freed from slavery, which means absolutely nothing as June has been taken by her former master, Mr Harper, on a treacherous journey to find new riches in Mexico while Coleman and his beloved dog, Oliver are left behind in Louisiana. Unexpectedly, a letter arrives asking for Coleman to join them, and that means Mrs. Harper and Florence are along for the ride as well. 

Though not large, this novel has the sweeping nature of Lonesome Dove and an incredible beating heart at its center. Harris, author of The Sweetness of Water, has revealed the varied complexities of relationships between slave and master as I have ever seen it done. 

I recommend this be on the docket of every book club this fall! There is so much to discuss in the relationships between the characters!

Amity is an odyssey of epic proportions that will stay with me forever.
