Night Watch

Set in the aftermath of the Civil War, Night Watch begins with 12-year-old ConaLee being put in a wagon next to her mother by a man called Papa, who was not her father, who terrorizes her mother, Eliza, by continually abusing her. He drops them off at an insane asylum in West Virginia, telling ConaLee to pretend to be her servant so they can stay together.
